On a bit of a last minute whim the husband and I decided to book a cheeky little staycay to Abu Dhabi over the National Day weekend. We were only planning on staying for the night so I was keen to make sure we had the perfect date night planned in advance. Upon hearing rave reviews and several recommendations from some of my best foodie friends we decided to visit Catch.
Part of The Nation Riviera Beach club the stunning restaurant is set on the beach, with an achingly beautiful terrace with panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf. The interiors are chic and classy, with hues of white and beautiful pale wood.
It was a lovely evening so we opted to sit out on the terrace where unbeknown to us we were treated to front row seats for not one but two National Day fireworks displays which started the night with a bang. (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
Our server Beck was fantastic throughout and upon arrival quick to explain the menu and concept. Given my current teetotal condition I decided to go wild and start the evening with a mocktail and as dubious as I am about mocktails (I normally find them way to sweet and sugary) I was super impressed. The husband as usual (and to my jealousy) was on the red wine.
We were so wowed by the menu that it took us quite a while to decide on what to order. All the dishes, particularly on the appetizer and sushi front, sounded insane and to be honest we could have quite easily ordered everything. We did however eventually decide the Beef Taco’s, the Fried Spicy Prawns and the Local Hit sushi.
The prawns came as described; fried and spicy atop a mixture of caramelised cashew nuts and dried chillies. They certainly packed a punch with plenty of flavour. The dish was on the dry side if you normally like things with a sauce but it certainly impressed. The Local Hit Sushi, comprising prawn tempura and Wagyu beef, cream cheese and teriyaki sauce was out of this world and the portion size was just perfect. Our fave of the starters had to be the beef tacos. The beef was juicy, succulent and full of rich flavours. The addition of the red cabbage coleslaw, spring onion and a squeeze of lime made these next level.
Onto mains and as you may have noticed if there is a black cod on the menu I just can’t resist. We opted to share this and the Chilean Sea Bass with a few sides thrown in for good measure. The Chilean sea bass came cooked in a cocotte of lemongrass broth with mushrooms and seasonal vegetables. The fish was so soft and beautifully cooked. The broth didn’t overpower it at all and it was a really different dish for me. The black cod was utterly sublime, and without a doubt rivals some of the others I’ve had in the region. The texture was perfect and the glaze divine. It was quite a large portion too which filled me with even more happiness!
Onto desserts, we decided we only just about had enough space to share one but Beck talked us into sharing two (oh Beck!) and just like that our arms were twisted. We went for the coconut panna cotta with tapioca, mango and passion emulsion. It didn’t come out at all as I was expecting but was so good I was quite gutted I had to share it with the husband (although I did manage to sneak in an extra spoonful when he wasn’t looking). The pineapple cheesecake with Pina Colada ice cream was again very different. It was very light with a subtle flavour, a thin base (which may upset some of you) and beautifully presented. Of the two the coconut panna cotta won us both over but the cheesecake was still a close second.
We both finished our meal at Catch proclaiming it was one of the best we’ve had in quite a while. We loved every single dish, the beautiful atmosphere and location and the fantastic staff. It really is a very special venue and if you are planning on visiting Abu Dhabi has to be top of your list. It actually just won Time Out Abu Dhabi’s Best Seafood Restaurant for the 4th year in a row! Enough said.
Thank you Catch and the whole team for a truly spectacular evening.
