So the news is finally out! That’s right I’m pregnant and due on April 26th so just over the 3 month mark. EEEK! Whilst keeping this little bun in the oven secret I have been having some major cravings for all things beige. Think Joey in Friends and his love for “fried stuff with cheese” and you’ve basically got me. These hankerings led us to the much talked about Luigia in Rixos Premium JBR just the other week.
I’d already heard lots of rave reviews about their pizza’s and that they have won several accolades including Best Pizza of 2018 from Gambero Rosso so I was expecting big things.
We visited on a Thursday evening around 8.30pm and were glad we’d booked as the place was rammed to the rafters and buzzing. Your humble, rustic local Italian Luigia is not. Its big, bright and almost a touch on the brash side. If the place was empty it could be a bit strange but with the crowds of people chatting away and clearly enjoying their food it just worked.
On this particular day I was in the market for all the carbs so couldn’t resist going straight in for the Pizza Petals I’d seen all over Instagram. We went for a mix of the normal and the bresaola version. Made with buffalo mozzarella, smoked Scamorza, mushrooms, truffle cream, fresh truffle shavings and either turkey ham or bresaola these were utterly indulgent. I could have quite easily scoffed 10 but manage to limit myself to just a couple.
Next up it was pizza time! We ordered an Etna and one of the specials which I can’t remember the name of (baby brain!) but which was simply topped with incredible buffalo mozzarella and some of the sweetest tomatoes I think I’ve ever had here in Dubai and finished with fresh basil. The Etna was nice but in true rookie style I didn’t check if it had a tomato base, which it didn’t, so was a bit disappointed but regardless the ingredients were obviously high quality and delicious. The special was most definitely our favourite and one I know I will order again and again. What I loved most about the pizza’s though was the beautiful light and tasty base. Luigia claim this is down to the fact that the dough is carefully produced; naturally fermented and proofed between 56 to 72 hours. I can honestly say it’s some of the best I’ve tasted.
Last but by no means least the baby made me order dessert (I really didn’t want to, promise) and we decided to share the chocolate fondant and The Brontolone; a giant choux pastry filled with pistachio ice cream and topped with hot chocolate sauce. Dead. But the winner definitely had to be the chocolate fondant which was perfectly cooked and deliciously gooey! The chocolate was so smooth and beautiful, I was in actual heaven.
I am most definitely putting Luigia right up there with some of my other favourite Italian restaurants here in Dubai. The whole evening was just fantastic and our server, Sande, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The menu is extensive with plenty of pasta and meat options too if you aren’t in the market for pizza, although I feel like you can’t go here and not try the pizza. Just take my word for it.
