“21 GRAMS, the weight of a human soul. 21 degrees, the latitude of the Balkan Peninsula.”
21 Grams is the (relatively) new Balkan Bistro located in Jumeirah which is grabbing the attention of bloggers and Instagrammers all over Dubai for its uniqueness.
The restaurant is small and unassuming. With urban concrete floors contrasting with Balkan rugs, dusty pink and orange sofas and rustic furniture; it’s minimalist, chic and very peaceful.
I visited last week to meet a friend for a coffee and a light lunch so I can’t give you the full low down on the food but I can tell you that everything we tried was perfectly cooked and presented making this hidden gem somewhere well worth a visit.
We couldn’t resist ordering one of their infused waters which came out beautifully bottled and perfect for a little piccie. We weren’t starving so opted for a light bite. My friend had visited previously and raved about the Bouyourdie, which is baked feta cheese with tomato, pepper, olive oil and oregano served with fresh bread. This was utterly divine, not huge and great as a sharing starter. After seeing the shots of their grilled octopus on Instagram and being a fiend for our 8-tentacled friends I had to order it. Cooked in orange and balsamic marinade and accompanied by baby potatoes and carrot puree it was possibly one of the best octopus dishes I’ve tried. Worth the visit just for this dish alone.
We decided to stay for a coffee and just had to try the ones that came out in chocolate-dipped ice cream cones. They were adorable and great for the ‘gram – although be warned you need to drink them pronto before the cone melts! On the recommendation of the staff we also spoiled ourselves with a little treat in the form of the Chocolate and Hazelnut Baklava. This was so deliciously sweet and moreish! It’s on the large side so definitely one to share unless you’re particularly ravenous.
All in all, a lovely, cosy little lunch spot serving up great coffee and simple yet delicious food. I’ve heard their brekkie is pretty amazing so looking forward to heading back to try it. I’ll keep you all posted!
